In other news, I watched basically the entire season of Girls yesterday, and yes, you are not wrong, critics galore, it is almost absurdly white, but then so is almost every television show, and yes, privilege, they are soaking in it, but. But. Lena Dunham is 26 now and it's her personal experience and I would be willing to forgive so much more than monocultural ignorance in someone who was making this at 24 and from the whitest place on Earth when she is this fucking awesome (and, I would assume, working on broadening her experience by living and working in NYC with, you know, PEOPLE).
I think the writing's amazing. Everything is funny and surprising: from harassment to workplace seduction to harassment to extortion in a minute and a half, to the fact that Adam is apparently a secretly worthwhile human being who might actually be an excellent boyfriend for her, specifically? That she and her friends are trying stuff and feeling their ways around? I like it even when it missteps, because it invites analysis and discussion and that's how people learn about stuff and each other and how progress is made.
The fact that she exists at all and is making television: creating writing producing directing starring. At 24/26. A woman! And a podgy one, at that! Her "I am having sex with my weird experimental maybe boyfriend" dumpling-soft body with its adorable little boobs and jiggly belly and frankly alarming lack of muscletone should not be groundbreaking television, but it so is. And even if she was "only" acting, only being incredibly excellent at being remarkably, even relentlessly, self-involved and hilariously, consistently self-sabotaging and willing to be absolutely unsympathetic and naked in every way? The delivery of her speech about her tattoos won me over for good, so basically, unless it is revealed that she's a spree killer with a minor in child trafficking, she's basically my hero.
